On Friday 30 October the squadron celebrated Halloween with a fancy dress party at the Squadron HQ. The evening was planned and run by the Cadet NCO team. A great night was had by all.
On Monday 26 October we welcomed three new cadets to 859 Squadron. At a ceremonial parade Joe Hayes, Calum Horne and Ethan Gordon were formally enrolled in the Air Training Corps as Second Class Cadets by the Squadron Padre - Rev Christine Sime.
Great to have you join the team! We hope you enjoy your time in the Air Cadets and grasp all of the amazing opportunities on offer.
After his selection as Squadron Sportsman of the Year in 2014, Cpl Jamie Graham has continued to rack up the sports representations. This weekend he was one of five South East Scotland Wing cadets selected to represent Scotland & Northern Ireland Region as members of the Senior Rugby Team. He will be competing against the very best rugby players from across the whole ATC.
Following her recent selection at the wing trials, Cdt Abigail Graham gained her first Wing Sports Blue on Sunday 25 October for representing South East Scotland Wing at the Inter Wing Hockey Competition. She also won a Gold Medal as the SESW team won the competition, besting teams from across Scotland.
In a first for the squadron Sgt Greenall, Cpl Marke and Cdt McTavish have joined the Wing Road Marching Team. The WRMT hope to enter the Nijmegen Four Day Marches in 2017 as part of the British Military Contingent. This is a grueling event which requires the cadets to march 25 miles each day, covering a staggering 100 miles in total.
The team completed their first road march training day, covering 21 km, on Sunday 11 November. Well done and good luck witht he rest of your training!
On Friday 09 October Sgt Greenall successfully completed his Senior Cadet Classification training and recieved his Senior Cadet badge from the Officer Commanding. To qualify as a Senior Cadet, Sgt Greenall undertook training in Air Navigation, Piston Engines and Military Aircraft Systems. His knowledge was then tested with formal examinations in each subject. This all counts towards a BTEC in Aviation Studies.
Well done Joe!
On Sunday 04 October four cadets travelled to Leuchars Station to take part in Air Experience Flying at No 12 AEF. Cpl Graham, Cdt Graham, Cdt Godfrey and Cdt McTavish each received a 30 minute flight in the Grob Tutor, during which they had the oppourtunity to take control of the aircraft themselves and perform some basic manoeuvres. Unfortunately a low cloud base precluded any aerobatics this time round but an excellent time was had by all.
